Simple Things ...

Finding yourself able to just "be" really does give you a sense of accomplishment. Something as simple as taking a deep breath, or even dropping your shoulders when you realize they're tensed can transport you to "being." I kind of went deeper into this analogy almost a year ago. Wow, time flies.

Dam ...

Was flipping through my copy of Dwell this weekend and came across this amazing photo of a dam in southeastern France by photographer Celine Clanet. It's amazing that this giant infrastructure could manage to fit so neatly within nature. And it's almost like the cyclists and pedestrians on the path aren't aware of what's off to their right. It's kind of a metaphor for life too, right? We're all on some sort of path, trying to achieve some sort of goal. But if we don't stop and take a look around us sometimes, we can miss some amazing things.

Let's call this (w/out being too cheesy;) "take a look around Monday." Hope you had a great weekend.

Laugh ...

I never thought about it before but a true laugh does have to have at least 3 or more "ha's" in it, doesn't it? I've realized that no matter what you might be going through, laughter is an amazing and powerful medicine. It's natural, has proven health benefits and some researchers believe the major function of laughter is to bring people together. On that note let's laugh today. Crack a joke and make someone else laugh. I think you'll be glad you did. And for those of you who make me laugh, thank you:)

Mission Accomplished ...

So remember that graphic design course I told you I was finally taking back in June? Well, last night was my final class at Art Center in Pasadena. Everything came full circle once I presented my 22 page workbook final and realized that was it. I did it. I accomplished something that I had only daydreamed about before and it felt really great. Not gonna lie though, it was tough sometimes getting through the grueling workload. Especially being a SAHM of two little ones that constantly need your attention while you're trying to get graphically inspired. But I did it, and it was so worth it. I learned so much about the creative process from my instructor who happens to be a principal graphic designer over at Walt Disney Imagineering. The wealth of knowledge I consumed over the course of the past 8 weeks is something that I feel so blessed to have experienced. Especially because taking this course was a first step in getting back to "me."

I know it's a rarity that I post on the weekend but I totally skipped yesterday's "It's 5pm Somewhere" post. Sorry about that. There were so many things going on that by the time I even had a few minutes to post something I got sidetracked by life. So I let life happen without stressing out about anything. I took a sort of mental health half day, if you will. It was great. Our day started out at the beach in the morning and ended with movie night (we watched the new Phineas and Ferb movie). So in the end it all worked out. Although I'm hoping to take a mental health full day next time. Hope you're having a great weekend so far. Group hug:)

Can't Get Enough ...

Good Monday to you! Did you have a good weekend? I had what you'd call a "full" weekend. Lots of friends, family and food. Friday night was the San Diego magazine party filled with friends, laughter and great food. Saturday we had overnight family guests and great food. Mother's day was filled with family, celebration and ... great food. I think you get the picture. Do you see my pink peonies? I can't get enough of them. They're my absolute favorite flower. Every time I walk by them I get a spring in my step. So I had to share them with you. Hope everyone has a great week!

Strange Brew ...

Can they look any more stylish and annoyed? Actually their expressions remind me of my encounter with the new mermaid at Starbucks yesterday. When the barista handed me my coffee I immediately noticed that the transition from old to revised mermaid has officially taken place. It just looked weird, not fun. Actually I think my exact reaction was an indoor-voice "eww." Then I apologized and let him know that I know it wasn't his decision. Then we had a friendly Three's Company laugh and agreed that she does look a bit unfinished, bare. Then I left 'cause in the end my coffee is still the same. Tall, in a grande cup, with cream and four raw sugars. Is that weird? How do you take yours?

Happy Weekend Everyone! ...

I love this zebra print Jamie has here in her bar area. I would love to work that into a closet, small bathroom or kids room one day. It's so fun.

Just read an interview with the funny and talented Jamie Meares in High Gloss magazine (p. 56-57). She has great style and of course I've always liked her blog. Good weekend reads if you get the chance.

Speaking of the weekend, any plans? We're pretty much prepping for 100% chance of rain this weekend in usually sunny Southern California. So in preparation for this wet weather I made chili–our rainy comfort food. Other than that our biggest task this weekend is buying P her first set of soccer shoes (or "boots" for all you hooligans) and shin guards. She starts her spring soccer program next week and we are so excited. Can't wait to watch her team buzz around like little bees on the soccer field.

Wishing everyone a great weekend! Group hug:)

Simple & Clean ...

At the end of the day I love nothing better than to climb into a bed with clean, crisp, white sheets. And maybe a pop of color with a throw at the foot of the bed. But otherwise, simple and clean is perfection to me in the room where we're supposed to let it all go and rest up for another go at things tomorrow.

Life's Width ...

How good is this?! Hopefully it'll help get you through the rest of the week. Here's to living the length and width of life!

A Good Sign ...

Walk in feeling like a muffin and coffee. Leave feeling like a slice of cake and a café au lait. Love it!

Can't Resist ...

Is it weird that I'm already thinking about breakfast tomorrow? And looking forward to my morning coffee? Sometimes pancakes just stop me in my tracks and suddenly my next meal must be pancakes. Today's one of those days. And coffee is a standard in our house. Sometimes twice a day. You?

Hope everyone had a great first week of the new year. And here's to some of you still recuperating from last weekend. Have a great weekend everyone! Group hug:)

Open-Air ...

Imagine the little minds that blossom from such a learning environment. This is an open-air kindergarten in Japan. As I mentioned yesterday, I just got done touring many preschools for P so when I run into something like this I appreciate it so, so much. I think all children deserve well-designed learning environments like this. The architects explain ... "the spring-up doors are created as a filter that gently mediates the garden setting and the door-heights are set so that only children can pass through them easily."

Then I got to thinking about that hideously expensive high school in LA that cost $578 million dollars to build. All I could think was how these "school officials" could've taken a fraction of that money and still built a well-designed, modern high school for those kids and the rest could've been used to build hundreds of public open-air kindergartens like this throughout the state.

It's funny when you think about it. These "school officials" themselves would've benefitted from a learning environment like this as they would most certainly have figured out a better way to spend $578 million dollars more creatively.

Doozy Of A Week ...

Wow, this week's been "one of those weeks." I had to remind myself countless times to throw my shoulders back, stand up straight and look focused. Don't judge, but I'm lagging super hard on unpacking what my friend Stephanie coined perfectly as "the non-essentials." Boxes of "non-essentials" still greet me daily in several rooms. Plus, it was Eric's birthday on Monday and P's birthday on Tuesday–happy birthday Babes! And now I'm trying to put the finishing touches on P's halloween themed birthday party with family tomorrow.

You should've seen me yesterday wandering around the hot-as-coals Target parking lot with two kids in tow, searching like mad for a dang double-seater cart! I think I walked a circular mile. Have you seen those things? So obnoxious, but so useful. Plus, I can maneuver the thing now without taking out end caps. Oh yeah, when I was in the halloween section I bumped into the Christmas section. What day is it anyway?

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Group hug:)

I'm Baaaaaaaacckk! ...

OMG you guys ... I had no idea I'd be without the internets for so dang long! Ugh, how annoying for me and apparently for some of you too. Thank you for the emails, FB messages and the sort. Didn't realize how missed I was. To say that I missed you guys is an understatement. I've spent the last three days living in the sad margins of internet life. This illustration from one of my favorite blogs Hyperbole and a Half expresses my glee of having the internet back beautifully. Allie describes this particular emotion as an "attention-deficient squirrel on PCP." Yup, that's me. Not sure if I can get back to you and all of my fave blogs fast enough.

So the move. It went well. I had the eye of the tiger for the first 10 hours but the look in my eye quickly changed from fierce tiger to tired, food-deprived, little wet dog. Moving is exhausting! Quick virtual high five to my SIL Christiane for helping with the kids all weekend:) I'm still unpacking things but the gist of it is in place. Yay. We're loving our new house and the neighbors I've met so far are super cool. And of course we have the internet again. So tell me, what have I missed?

Things Found While Moving ...

1. Oh my goodness. These little L.A.M.B.'s make me almost cry every time. These were P's first pair of shoes (she's almost 4 now) and we got comments on them all the time. I almost sold them in the yard sale but thankfully Bianca and Alexis knocked some sense into me. These will now be going to P when she has her baby shower someday:)

2. "Where is my Pizzicato Five CD?! I can't find it anywhere!" That was about 6 years ago when I was trying to download it to my iTunes. And here it was the whole time left in the Sony boom box. That's right I said "boom box." By the way, their song "Twiggy Twiggy" is the best take-you-to-your-happy-place song ever. Has the best beat and makes me move every time. And even though it's in Japanese, I know all the words. And so will you.

3. Had forgotten all about these great chairs that I got from my friend Juliet. I had them in the house for a bit but then decided to get them re-upholstered and then I got married, had two kids and forgot. But I think I'm going to keep these and finally get them done. Alex I'll be calling you.

4. This is one of the few Hermés boxes I stole/inherited from a friend of mine who had just received her entire dinner set. I know insane. Awesomely insane. I intended to stack them on our coffee table but then P (K wasn't born yet) started climbing furniture and we had to do away with anything of value below 2 ft. from the ground. I will find a home for you orange boxes, oh yes I will.

What The Fun Is Going On? ...

First of all, I don't know this girl but this photo is befitting for two reasons. One, I finally went to bikram yoga last night where we do this exact pose. And two she's doing the Standing Bow Pose in front of the Pannikin–one of my fav places where I had coffee with Heather just last week. And it was Heather who encouraged me to get my depleted butt to bikram last night. Do you see the full circle here? Doesn't stop there ... during class our yoga instructor mentioned they were celebrating some guy who had just completed his 500th straight day of bikram yoga (can you imagine?). And then when I went to publish this very post I realized it's my 500th post! What the fun is going on? All sorts of intertwining happenings going on here. Can someone please translate?

More importantly though, yoga was amazing. It's exactly what I needed to hit the reset button. Been doing it for the better part of the last 7 or 8 years but lost my way the last few months. But no fear, I'm back on my yogame. Plus, bikram is the only form of exercise that doesn't bore me to pieces–there's a lot to achieve with each pose. I mean after 8 years you'd think I'd be pro, but far from it.

P.S. Even though I don't know who this girl is, something tells me we're only one degree of separation.

Right About Now ...

Ran into this photo and couldn't help but feel a personal metaphor. Everything around me is beautiful, amazing but somehow I feel a little depleted today. I think it's the move and everything that goes with it like finally having to go through that drawer you've been able to avoid for the last five years until now. And running into documents that you can't just throw away, but need to sit and shred for two hours. Ugh. And by the way, is she wearing a moving jumper? This photo is more appropriate than I thought.

A Near Depp Experience ...

Can you even imagine? You're a teenager and Johnny Depp grabs you by the arms and stares you in the eyes. As if you weren't in love with him already! I mean I'm not sure I would've actually cried if my favorite celeb grasped me like that. However, I did almost pass out when I worked at American Rag Cie. in LA. Anthony Kiedis from the Chili Peppers wanted to wear the shorts he had just purchased out of the store so I had to put my hand completely in the backside of his shorts to safely remove the sharp part of the safety tag. Pure bliss (this was way before you Eric).

Ten bucks girl in the middle passed out.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Group hug:)

I'm Not Sure, But I Like It ...

A little stylish randomness for your Friday afternoon. Here's some more randomness for you. Was just at the carwash and I saw for sale an Ed Hardy litter bag. Who goes to the carwash and says "there it is! I've been looking all over for this beaut." Nothing against Ed Hardy, it's just not my particular cup of tea nor my particular choice of in-car trash receptacle. So here's my question for you ... you're going on a first date with this really nice guy and when he picks you up you notice said trash receptacle in his car. Are you stoked or did you throw up a little in your mouth?

Can't wait to read your answers. Have a great weekend everyone! Group hug:)
