Amsterdam ...

First Paris, then Lyon and finally the last leg of our trip ... Amsterdam. After taking a seven hour train ride from Lyon we arrived at my brother-in-law's house in Amsterdam. We arrived in the evening to a party in full swing. Part of me was so tired from traveling I just wanted to fall asleep, but the other part of me was ready for a drink. The latter prevailed.
We took a boat tour of the canals. Which I'm glad we did because it was great to get a water perspective of the city. And of course, all of the bikes and houseboats.
It is common to find very, very, very narrow staircases in these tall and narrow buildings. The ones in my BIL's building were not only narrow, but were spiraled and I swear each step was only inches wide. This, I learned, is why many (if not all) of the buildings have a crane-like structure at the top (noted by my red arrows) which are used to haul in large pieces of furniture through the windows. What a challenge, right?!
Had to post this little shop because it had the best selection of graphic wrapping paper and other great little paper goods. I was in my happy place.
A great little bookshop. I loved the giant windows that showcased the floor to ceiling shelves of books. So pretty.
I popped into Retro en Chic one day while cruising around town. It was hands down the best vintage store I had ever been in. There were so many amazing pieces from hats and dresses, to shoes and sunglasses (as you can see here). I kept thinking how this place would be a stylists dream.
And last but not least ... mexican food. That's right, mexican food from The Taco Shop in Amsterdam. I know, it sounds cuckoo, but my BIL's really good friend Logan (originally from Colorado) owns this place and we were highly recommended to try it out. It was so, so good I had to take a photo. And rarely do I take food photos on this blog! So if you're ever cruising Amsterdam and get a hankering for mexican food you now know where to go.

I have so many fun pics from Amsterdam that I plan to do a couple of sub posts which are in the works. I'll post soon:)

Mexican food in Amsterdam? I'm totally living there now! And retro en Chic looks like my kind of store! Can you imagine the goodies they sold back in 1953?

Amsterdam is hands down one of my favorite cities. Bike riding, the food and the people made it a perfect trip for us. Your trip looks fantastic.

I've heard so many wonderful things about Amsterdam from friends who have visited. But now seeing that sweet bookstore and vintage shop...I'm just wondering where can I fit in a trip!

Great post! Would love to have the address of the paper shop, love me some fun wrapping paper! This can be a bit of challenge here (I live in a suburb outside of Den Haag, Netherlands)since most people have their gifts wrapped at the store with the boring wrapping paper with store's logo on it. Blah! Can't wait to see your other posts! - Rachel

From your photos, Amsterdam looks so charming. I've never been so I'm not sure if that's the proper word for it. I've heard it's a beautiful city as your photos prove.
Your story of the skinny staircase reminds me of the five-floor walk-up we lived in while in New York. No elevator. I bet you got your stairmaster on going to and from BIL's home. :)
Mexican food in Amsterdam. ;) We ate Chinese food in Venice. It was actually good.

My step-brother lives in Amsterdam with his wife (and owns a restaurant...wonder if your BIL has ever heard of it!). We visited them a few years ago and had an amazing time. Amsterdam is such a great place, I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. Plus, any place seems better when you have a local showing you the ropes :)
